CHAPTER THIRTY

Dillon walked into the house and saw Penny bustling around the kitchen. She had been with them for about two weeks now, and he could see that she was settling in nicely and growing more comfortable and relaxed around them.

The guys were building an extension to the house. Penny should have her own room and living space. In the meantime, Dillon had insisted that she have his room.

He had been spending the last two weeks on the couch but he’d never felt happier. As long as Penny was safe and comfortable, he could lie on a bed of thorns and sleep like a baby.

Penny was a very capable, efficient housekeeper. She could juggle many tasks at once, yet she made everything look so easy. The house was now so clean they could eat off the floor and there was always something baking in the oven when they got home.

“Hey,” Dillon called out.

Penny spun round and wiped her hands on her apron. “Hey.” Her smile was radiant, and her eyes lit up with pure joy when she saw him. It was a lovely sight to come home to.

“Ford and Ryder drove up to the sawmill to deliver the logs,” Dillon said. “I came home after helping them load up the truck.”

Penny nodded and gave him a knowing smile. She knew that they didn’t want her to be alone for too long. If they had to work late, they would take turns to swing by the house and check on her.

Penny’s safety was paramount.

The drive up to the sawmill took several hours, so when they had to make a delivery, the guys would make sure that one of them came home early to keep Penny company. It was Dillon’s turn today.

Penny glanced at the clock and said, “They should be home in time for dinner.”

“I’ll go wash up. Then I’ll help you prepare dinner,” Dillon offered.

“Okay. Thanks.”

Once Dillon had showered and changed, he headed back to the common kitchen. Penny straightened up and turned around as soon as he stepped into the dining area even though he hadn’t made a sound. It was as though she could sense him.

Her senses were already sharpening. Her wolf was forming inside of her and Dillon felt both nervous and excited for her. He could only imagine how confusing and frightening the Change was for her, but Penny was holding up really well.

In fact, she seemed to be so much healthier and happier now. Her true strength and personality, which she had kept hidden for so long, were beginning to show.

She was playful, witty and cheerful, and she had a wicked sense of humor. She was also an amazing cook and housekeeper. It was a joy to watch her blossom into a confident, sassy young woman.

Penny opened her mouth to say something but only a small wordless sound escaped.

Dillon saw her heated gaze follow the water droplets which were dripping from his wet hair down his neck.

She licked her lips as she dragged her eyes down his chest.
